The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson, will officially open the 10th Annual Air Quality Governance Lekgotla on Monday 28 September 2015, in Bloemfontein. During the opening session of the Lekgotla, the 2015 State of Air Report and National Air Quality Indicator will be tabled.
The theme of the 2015 Air Quality Governance Lekgotla is “Launching the Air Quality Management Systems for Transparent Governance and Improved Service Delivery.” The event is expected to bring together at least 350 air quality officials from all three spheres of government, to deliberate on various pertinent issues such as Air Quality Management Planning Tools, Ambient Air Quality Monitoring as well as Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement. It is a platform and an opportunity for government officials to interact and strengthen regulatory tools towards improved air quality management.
Since the promulgation of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (39) of 2004 (AQA), government has developed several regulatory tools and interventions to manage air quality in South Africa. The need to improve service delivery has led to the development of web-based systems which are intended to improve transparent air quality governance.
The department will launch the South African Atmospheric Emission Licensing and Inventory Portal (SAAELIP) on 30 September 2015, which is comprised of the System for National Atmospheric Emission Licensing (SNAEL) and the National Atmospheric Emission Inventory System (NAEIS). These systems are aimed at propelling transparent air quality governance and improved service delivery.
