The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will lead a community outreach and a clean-up campaign in the Emalahleni Local Municipality area on Friday, 8 May 2015. The visit forms part of government’s stakeholder engagement following the recent attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.
It is through this clean-up campaign that the Department of Environmental Affairs continues to carry its Constitutional mandate of ensuring a clean environment that is not harmful to the health and wellbeing of the people. The campaign is also a continued response to President Jacob Zuma’s call during his June 2014 State of the National Address, that all South Africans should dedicate time for clean-ups to ensure we live in safe, healthy and environmentally friendly country.
As part of the clean-up campaign, Deputy Minister Thomson will attend to various spots which have been turned into illegal dumping sites. The campaign will also raise awareness to alleviate pollution through amongst other things compliance to the relevant environmental legislation.
