Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson launches International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer, 16 Sept

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson to host the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer In Musina, Limpopo Province

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will on the 16 of September 2015 host the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone layer, at Musina, Limpopo Province.

This day has been marked annually by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) since the proclamation of the Day by the United Nations General Assembly on 19 December 1994 to commemorate the date in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) as the focal point for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, has a Constitutional responsibility to protect the right of all South Africans to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being, and to protect the environment through legislative and other measures that prevent, amongst others, air pollution and ecological degradation.

Under the theme “30 Years of Healing the Ozone Together” the Department and Limpopo provincial government officials will seek to encourage, inform and prepare the learners and community of Musina to protect themselves from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun, and inspire learners to pursue careers in, amongst others, chemical management to ensure that a collective effort towards healing the ozone is continued.

The day’s events will kick off with a 3-4km road race in which leaners and community members will participate.

Media are invited to attend the launch as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 16 September 2015
Venue: Lesley Manyathela Stadium
