Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson hands over Alfred Mkhize Recreational Park in Barberton, 16 Aug

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will on Thursday, 16 August 2018 hand over the Alfred Mkhize Recreational Park, in Barberton, Mpumalanga.

Funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs, the project entails fencing of the park, installation of playing equipment, park benches, construction of braai facilities, sporting courts/fields, development of a nursery, construction of pedestrian bridges, and an office with ablution facilities, amphitheatre, landscaping and planting of indigenous trees.

The open space previously used for illegal dumping has been transformed into a recreational area for the community to relax and enjoy the natural environment. This is an objective to ensure that whilst addressing the mandate of the department - job creation, small business and skills development opportunities are created.

The handing over of the park includes the unveiling of the plaque and ribbon cutting by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs together with the Executive Mayor of Mbombela, Cllr Mathonsi.
