Today, a group of twelve students are departing for Cuba to begin their six years of study for medicine through the South Africa – Cuba Joint Academic Programme. The students will be accompanied by their parents and relatives who will only be able to see them in two years when they get their first opportunity to visit their families.
Journalists are invited to the departure of the students from the King Shaka International Airport at 14h00 today, Tuesday 20 September 2011.
The MEC for Health is already in Cuba to prepare for the arrival of this group and to meet the 58, currently completing their studies, already in Cuba. Since the launch of the programme, fifteen years ago; 155 students from KwaZulu-Natal have been trained as doctors and are required to return to their communities and work.
