The MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, the US Consul General in Durban and World Health Organisation’s representative in South Africa will visit Pholela to strengthen the Medical Male Circumcision Programme, hand over four innovative TB screening machines and engage key stakeholders.
The event will take place on 27 September, Tuesday, at 09h00 at Pholela Community Healthcare Centre. Journalists are invited to be part of the event and are urged to indicate transport requirements.
The Community Oriented Primary Health Care (COPC) practice was pioneered by Sidney and Emily Kark and their colleagues at Pholela during the 1940s and became a forerunner of and direct contributor to what later emerged as 'the primary health care approach'.
COPC remains highly relevant to health service development in South Africa today and the Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal is re-engineering its primary health care services around the practices that were championed by Drs Sidney and Emily Kark in Pholela in the ‘40s.
The delegation comprising of Mr Sergie Naidoo (CEO: National Health Laboratory Services), the WHO South Africa representative Dr Stella Anyangweand the US Consul General Jill Derderian, of the Durban office; will hand over four GenExpert machines to local hospitals and clinics for the quick diagnosis of TB and also engage community-based youth organisations on programmes aimed at maintaining the HIV negative status of the young men who have undergone male circumcision. 98% of the 60000 young men between the ages of 15 to 24 years tested HIV negative.
