The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Senzo Mchunu, in collaboration with the Mayor of Ilembe Municipality Cllr Vukani Mdabe, have identified community garden projects through Enterprise Ilembe that will serve as primary producers of vegetables for the National School Nutrition Programme.
The President of the Republic of South Africa in his State of the Nation Address indicated the need to create jobs opportunities to reduce the burden of high unemployment rate.
This initiative by the Department of Education and Ilembe Municipality aims to respond to the President’s call of mass job creation. To this end, the Department of Education in KZN and Enterprise Ilembe will be conducting a workshop to provide an overview of this fascinating project at Ballito tomorrow.
“Part of the aim of the National School Nutrition Programme is to help with poverty alleviation in local communities, therefore community-based gardening projects have been identified in all districts in the province and training of 75 members of these projects commenced in January and February 2012,” said MEC Senzo Mchunu.
