The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa will lead a national consultative conference on electronic and electrical waste (e-Waste) management at the Birchwood Hotel on 4 September 2015.
The conference will focus on issues around the contextualisation of the e-Waste challenges in South Africa, on the management of e-Waste in Municipalities, e-Waste Recycling and Policy and legislative Environment.
e-Waste makes up 5% to 8% of municipal solid waste in South Africa and is growing at a rate three times faster than any other form. Most of the e-Waste ends up in the environment.
The challenge in the proper management of e-Waste is a result of a lack of recycling infrastructure, inadequate funding, poor legislation, a lack of public awareness and market based instruments.
It is the objective of the Department of Environmental Affairs, through the findings of the rapid response survey of Municipalities, case studies, the consultative conference and the industry response and the draft Industry e-Waste Management Plan to identify challenges, best practice models and the needs of government in respect of e-Waste management and governance to ensure effective and efficient policy, legislation and regulations.
Media is invited to attend.
