South Africa & Norway Antarctic and Southern Atlantic Oceans Workshop
The Department of Environmental Affairs, will in cooperation with the Norwegian Embassy to South Africa, host the SA-Norway Antarctica and Southern Atlantic Ocean Workshop II from the 4th - 6th of December 2017 at the DAFF Research Aquarium, Sea Point, Cape Town.
South Africa and Norway have a long history of cooperation in the field of marine science dating back to the development of the Living Marine Resources Act (LMRA) during the period 1994-1996. A Research Seminar is taking place on Tuesday 05 December 2017, and is open to the entire marine science community. The seminar will in particular focus on the national Antarctic programmes of the two countries, namely: South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) and the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI). Specific areas of mutual interest to be deliberated on include: interactions between the Southern Atlantic Ocean and the Antarctic ice shelf, as well as highlighting the approaches that can be used to address them.
The broader South Africa - Norway Science Week 2017 will follow up ideas, initiatives and contacts from last year’s successful precursor, Value Creation in Ocean Space and New Opportunities in the Blue Economy.
Members of the media are invited to cover the seminar on the 5th as follows:
