Environmental Affairs hosts second Non-Motorised Transport Conference, 31 Oct

Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will open the 2nd National Non- Motorised Transport Conference, hosted in collaboration with the Department of Transport and KfW (German Development Bank), on 31 October 2014.

President Jacob Zuma announced prior to the Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2009 that South Africa will implement nationally appropriate mitigation actions which will result in the reduction of carbon emissions by 34 % by 2020 and by 42 % in 2025, dependant on availability of finance and technology.

The National Climate Change Response Policy was introduced and sets the country’s vision for an effective climate change response and the long-term transition to a climate resilient and low-carbon economy and society.  The Non-Motorised Transport Project is integral to the implementation of the Policy’s Flagship Programmes with particular focus on sustainable transport.

The Conference provides a platform where issues that need to be overcome in the planning and roll-out of non-motorised infrastructure are identified, while the provinces of Gauteng, Polokwane and eThekwini, which form part of the pilot sites identified, will provide insights on non-motorised transport networks in respective cities.

The total cost of the Non-Motorized Transport Programme (NMT) is R50 million for all the three municipalities.

Four themes guide the conference agenda, namely, Policy, Access to non-motorised transport, Engaging with NMT users, and Awareness Programmes.

Non-governmental organisations and civil associations, such as Jozi Cycling Forum will participate in the Conference, addressing a key gap in the advocacy and promotion of cycling and other forms of non-motorised transport.
