The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host a two-day Marine and Coastal Enforcement workshop in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape, from 3 to 4 September 2015.
The purpose of the workshop is to equip stakeholders on the effective enforcement of the Integrated Coastal Management Act in South Africa. The workshop is also a platform to build capacity for institutions that are legally mandated to implement the regulations in accordance to the precepts of the ICM Act.
During a joint enforcement operation with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the South African Police Service and coastal provinces, the DEA established that there is a need for a capacity building workshop as some of the regulatory institutions were still using old regulations in dealing with coastal transgressions.
