“Gearing Up For Air Quality Management towards and Beyond 2020”
The Department of Environmental Affairs will from 02 – 04 October 2017, host the 12th Annual Air Quality Governance Lekgotla at the CedarWoods of Sandton, Hotel and Conference Centre, Woodmead in Gauteng.
The conference will take place over a period of three days and all government air quality managers and officers, through the knowledge of what can and should be done gained during the Lekgotla, are inspired to build, strengthen and/ or fine-tune their air quality management interventions towards the implementation of the Air Quality Act (AQA) to contribute to a better life for all.
The Annual Air Quality Governance Lekgotla provides Air Quality Officers from all spheres of government with a unique opportunity to discuss and debate ways and means of addressing the various governance challenges and discuss plans for the year ahead.
Therefore, the Lekgotla aims to provide the necessary guidance and support to authorities towards the effective implementation of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (39) of 2004 (AQA). The 2017 Lekgotla will focus on amongst others ambient air quality monitoring initiatives, the review of the National Framework for air quality management and atmospheric emission management.
Government has been implementing programmes and tools as per the 2012 National Framework to achieve the quality of air that is not harmful to the health and wellbeing of the people. The event provides an opportunity for intergovernmental coordination and collaboration where government officials share experiences and opportunities, debate issues and develop ways and means of addressing air quality management challenges.
Amongst those expected to attend the conference are National Air Quality Officer, Dr Thulie Khumalo, the City Of Johannesburg Municipality etc. An upgraded South African Air Quality Information System (SAAQIS) will also be launched.
