Environmental Affairs hosts the seventh National Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Lekgotla
The Department of Environmental Affairs will launch the 2016/17 National Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Report (NECER) and unveil the new Green Scorpions logo during the forthcoming seventh national Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Lekgotla (ECEL) from 06 to 09 November 2017 in White River, Mpumalanga.
The NECER provides a national overview of environmental compliance and enforcement activities undertaken by relevant institutions across the country during the period 01 April 2016 - 31 March 2017. The report includes the work of the Environmental Management Inspectorate (EMI), commonly known as the Green Scorpions.
The Green Scorpions are a network of environmental compliance and enforcement officials from national, provincial and municipal government. It is these EMIs that are tasked with ensuring the implementation of, and adherence to specific pieces of national environmental legislation. A uniquely designed Green Scorpions logo will stand alongside the existing official EMI logo as emblems signifying the Inspectorate as a distinctive law enforcement authority mandated to give effect to the environmental right enshrined in S24 of the Constitution.
This year’s biennial ECEL will be convened under the theme: “People, Purpose, Passion: the Pathway to EMI Success,” bringing together local and international environmental management authorities to deliberate on various strategies to deal with environmental contraventions in South Africa.
The Lekgotla will conclude with an awards ceremony where the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will recognise excellent and outstanding performance of the EMIs and other key role-players in tackling environmental contraventions.
