Environmental Affairs hosts National Ocean and Coastal Information Management System stakeholder workshop, 7 to 8 Nov

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), will hold the National Ocean and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS) (and related Decision Support Tools) stakeholder workshop from 7 - 8 November 2017 in Cape Town.

The two departments with technical and specialist support from the CSIR, are involved in an exciting process to work with key stakeholders in developing a National Ocean and Coastal Information Management System for South Africa, as well as to extend earth observation capability. The OCIMS Project is now half-way through the first 5-year phase and has already contributed positively to, amongst others, compliance and enforcement interventions and safeguarding the aquaculture industry through a red-tide / Harmful Algal Bloom alerts Decision Support Tool.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together ocean and coastal stakeholders and will also have the opportunity to be exposed to live demonstrations, including:

• Integrated Vessel Tracking;
• Harmful Algal Bloom;
• Coastal Flood Hazard;
• Operations at Sea and Rescue;
• Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Viewer; and
• Coastal Viewer.
