Results of the Municipal by-elections held on 13 December 2023

During the by-elections contested on 13 December 2023 in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces the African National Congress (ANC) retained three (3) seats and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)

won a seat.

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Thapelo David Lerothodi, in Ward 17 in Rand West Municipality – GT485 The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 51,75% total votes cast, compared to 52,37% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 28,95%.
  • Simphiwe Mlungisi Khanyile, Ward 101, in EThekwini Municipality – ETH. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 67,32% of the total votes cast, compared to 48,00% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 21,57%.
  •  Bheki Wiseman Cele, Ward 23 in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 90,84% total votes cast, compared to 84,44% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 41,48%.

 The new IFP councillor is:

  • Sanele Cedric Madlala, Ward 11 in INkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN237. The party won a seat previously won by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 55,96% of the total votes cast compared to 53,59% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 52,04%.
