Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development visits Mankabidi Potato Farm, 11 Dec

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development will visit the Mankabidi Potato Farm on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The farm is a land reform project funded by the department at an amount of R9,7 million for potato production. The farm is leased to a female farmer, Ms Cecilia Mamabolo, following a successful land application through the department for the allocation of a commercial farm. This potato project has been successfully implemented in partnership with Potato SA as a commodity organisation. The project is currently harvesting its very first potato crop, targeting various markets.

The farmer is confident the very first harvest will yield a projected maximum of 45 tons per hectare with a combined total of 450 tons coming from the planted 10 ha.

Part of the visit is to witness harvesting, sorting, and washing using the potato sorting machine that the department purchased for the project.

Food security is central to government priorities and the Land Reform Programme plays a pivotal role towards enhancing food security.
