Environmental Affairs hosts National Man and Biosphere Awareness event in George, 20 - 21 Feb

The Department of Environmental Affairs in conjunction with the Eden Municipality and Garden Route Reserve Company will host the National Man and the Biosphere Showcase Event, from 20 to 21 February 2015 at the Garden Route Biosphere.

The aim of the event is to raise public awareness on conservation, research and development brought forth by the biosphere reserves. A biosphere is an ecosystem that supports life and all living organisms that inhabit it.

Biosphere reserves are national sites of terrestrial and marine ecosystems designated under United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). They are areas that are much more than “protected areas” and form an integral part of a regional planning and development strategy aimed at promoting sustainable development and conservation.

The annual biosphere reserve event has been identified as one of the approaches to increase the level of public awareness of biosphere reserves in the country, particularly to communities living near reserves. The awareness will highlight the importance of biosphere reserves and why is it important for sustainable land use management.

The National Department of Environmental Affairs will be joined by Eden Municipality for the inaugural of the biosphere reserve awareness. This event will be celebrated under the theme ‘Biosphere Reserve, sustainable land use management.’’
