Results of the municipal by-elections held on 14 December 2022
The Electoral Commission is pleased with the successful holding of 45 by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the North West yesterday, 14 December 2022, which were overwhelmingly peaceful and ran smoothly.
Over 450 candidates from 17 political parties contested the bumper 45 by-elections – 39 of which were as a result of the dissolution of the Ditsobotla Local Council, in the North West, where 20 ward seats and 19 Proportional
Representation (PR) seats were contested.
The Electoral Commission is also encouraged by the turnout of voters, which averaged 42% of the over 108 000 registered voters, considering the inclement weather and that the Wednesday voting day was normal working day.
Including yesterday’s by-elections, the Electoral Commission has held 102 municipal by-elections since 1 January 2022.
