Electoral Commission on municipal ward by-elections will take place on 20 Apr

Candidates contesting municipal by-elections on 20 April 2022

Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu- Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape on Wednesday, 20 April 2022. 

The twenty candidates from ten political parties and two independent candidates will contest the by-elections. 

In the Eastern Cape: 

  • Ward 33 in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139 will be contested by Nomathansanqa Zibia Mtati from the African National Congress (ANC); Phumlisa Ralana from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Martha Ntombekhaya Kortman an Independent candidate. 
     

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the election set aside by court order. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 63,84% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 44;22% of valid votes.  

In the KwaZulu-Natal:  

  • Ward 103 in the EThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by Jeffrey Linda Mchunu from the African National Congress (ANC); Gerome Nhlanhla Zondi from the Democratic Alliance (DA); Mafi Blessing Sithole from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Mthetheleli Sibisi, the Independent Candidate; Phumelele Lancelot Bhengu from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); Wortsworth Dumakude from the Justice and Employment  Party (JEP); and Msawenkosi Sikhumbuzo Biyela from People’s Revolutionary Movement (PRM).
     

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of a councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 44,67% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 42,45% of valid votes. 

In the Northern Cape: 

  • Ward 03 Phokwane Municipality – NC094 from will be contested by Trevo Conrad Madlala from the African National Congress (ANC); Olebogeng Samuel Tumodi from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Lerato Patricia Makena from the Patriotic Alliance (PA).The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the termination of councillor’s membership from party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 42,96% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 47,99% of valid vote. 


In the Western Cape: 

  • Ward 02 Witzenberg Municipality – WC022  from will be contested by Brian Carolus Albertus from the  African National Congress (ANC); Patric Daniels from the Democratic Alliance; Jennilee Gertru-Ann Baadjies from the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF); Saul Paulus Bosman from Good Party; Petrus Heradien from the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ICOSA); Lindsay Amelia Segrys from Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Ralph Elroy Du Plessis from the Witzenberg Aksie (WA).

 
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of a councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 48,72% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 38,53% of valid votes.
