Minister Cwele to respond to public inputs on the Protection of Information Bill

State Security Minister, Dr Siyabonga Cwele (MP), will this Friday, 17 September 2010, table his comments on the inputs made during the public hearings on the Protection of Information Bill. He will be addressing Parliament’s Adhoc Committee on the Protection of Information Legislation.

The Minister is expected to provide, amongst other things, responses on areas of the bill that have been described as overbroad and vague. This to ensure that the intentions and understanding of this bill is enhanced.

His formal response to the Adhoc Committee takes place against the backdrop of a public debate on this bill and its intentions, including concerns by some in the media and civil society that it undermines the constitutional rights of freedom of expression and freedom of the media.

The Minister’s response will form part of the work that the Adhoc Committee will have to consider, when it processes this bill further.

Details of the presentation are as follows:

Date  : 17 September 2010 (Friday)
Time   : 09h00
Venue: Room E249, New Wing, Parliament

Note: Minister will address the media immediately after his response to Parliament at Imbizo Media Centre, 120 Plein Street
