The Portfolio Committee on Transport, will on Sunday, 18 April 2010, conduct a public awareness campaign in Groutville Entshawini area in KwaDukuza, to educate people about the processes and procedures which are followed by road accident victims when lodging claims with the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
The campaign will be held at Neva's community hall, Entshawini area starting at 13h00. This awareness campaign aims to educate the public about their rights to lodge claims with the Road Accident Fund in an event of an accident as they contribute to the fund through taxes and fuel levies. The committee will be accompanied by RAF.
The public will also be informed that they have a right to lodge claims directly with RAF without the involvement of consultants and lawyers as it has been the practice in the past. This follows the passing of an amendment to the Road Accident Fund Act which allows road accident victims to approach RAF directly with claims.
Transport Committee chairperson, Mxolisi Kaunda said: "We have decided to conduct this public awareness campaign at Entshawini, KwaDukuza, because of the high rate of fatal accidents involving pedestrians. Many pedestrians have been killed in that area while crossing the road.
"We have seen several marches by the community of Entshawini demanding the introduction of safety measures to curb road fatalities in their area. As a result, the Transport Department has constructed several speed humps on the road in a bid to address community concerns".
The committee chairperson further said that "apart from educating the people about the Road Accident Fund, the committee wants to engage with the people of KwaDukuza and listen to their transport challenges with a view to fast track service delivery in that area".
The media is invited to be part of this public awareness campaign.
