MEC Willies Mchunu monitors schools operating in Uthukela District, 21 to 23 Jan

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will start his annual schools opening functionality monitoring programme in the Uthukela district on Wednesday (21 January 2015), where he is deployed as the service delivery champion.

This is in line with government’s efforts of ensuring that schools kick start the year on a positive note. Mchunu is expected to interact with the district officials from the education department, school governing bodies, principals, teachers, learners and other relevant stakeholders.

He is expected to visit four schools whose Grade 12 results dropped in 2014, and this intervention will be a way of finding ways of improving the state of learning through tackling all the social challenges that are a major hindrance to learning. Officials from other departments are expected to note challenges ranging from crime, teenage pregnancies, substance abuse, scholar transport, teacher absences and shortages, and other social factors.

Mchunu will visit these four schools over a period of three days under the Uthukela district municipality. He will be accompanied by Members of Parliament, senior district officials  from the Department of Education, Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, other relevant government departments and the local Mayors.
