As we celebrate the Women’s Month, the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature will hold its annual Women’s Parliament on 7 and 8 August 2011 at the Kokstad Oval in Kokstad Municipality under Sisonke District.
Women from all six parties that are represented in our Legislature will participate in this event under the theme,” Working together to Enhance Women’s Economic Empowerment through skills Development and Sustainable Job Creation”.
The Legislature has adopted this theme in line with the national agenda of enhancing economic opportunities for youth and women during the fourth term of our democratic dispensation which is characterised by what is called “economic struggle”.
In this regard, delegates will be expected to discuss various ways in which economic opportunities can be enhanced, through government intervention, which will lead to their full participation in the mainstream economy. The Women’s Parliament is expected to adopt concrete resolutions which will be forwarded to government for implementation.
Delegates will be ordinary women who are not members of the Legislature, but who will be representing their women political formations including the ANC Women’s League, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Women’s Brigade, Democratic Alliance (DA) Women’s wing, and other opposition parties in the KZN Legislature.
The Women’s Parliament is part of the legislature’s strategy to broaden public participation in the oversight and law-making processes, and to enhance participatory democracy in KwaZulu-Natal.
The first day will see key speakers across various fields addressing women on issues that affect them directly. These range from gender related issues, access to business and economic opportunities for women. The second day will be a debate under the theme, and the event will close with declarations for the provincial government to take further, in its law making processes.
Members of the Media are invited to cover the event.
