The Speaker of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni today announces that as part of the legislature's commitment to strengthen participatory democracy in KwaZulu-Natal by bringing the legislature closer to the people, the legislature will visit Nongoma under the Zululand District and hold a three day sitting from the 1 to 3 June 2010 at Mthashana FET College, KwaGqikazi Campus.
Speaker Nkonyeni said, "This programme of taking legislature to the people will give members an opportunity to interact with the people of Zululand and understand their needs so as to accelerate service delivery in their areas. The sitting of the Legislature in Zululand District is in keeping with our innovative programme of taking legislature to the people which has grown from strength to strength since its inception six years ago."
The sitting follows the visits by the multi-party delegation of the legislature to all Zululand municipalities in May. A comprehensive report of the multi-party delegation on the Zululand visits has been prepared and will be tabled and debated by the legislature during its sitting in Nongoma.
The speaker also said, “The programme of taking legislature to the people has enhanced our oversight role as members get to know the realities on the ground through direct interaction with the public. People raise various issues which affect them directly in their communities and the expectations they have from government. This has enabled committees to exercise robust oversight over provincial departments to ensure that service delivery backlogs are addressed speedily."
The legislature sitting in Nongoma will debate, amongst other things:
* Report by the MEC for Education on education issues concerning Zululand
District
* Report by the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development on issues concerning Zululand District.
The speaker further said that the visit to Zululand will be dominated by interaction with the public in order to give ordinary people space to raise issues before their elected representatives.
