KwaZulu-Natal Legislature embarks on Project Paint to improve learning and teaching conditions in schools

In a bid to encourage members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and communities to do voluntary work in their areas, the Honourable Speaker of the Provincial Legislature Ms NP Nkonyeni, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize and MEC for Education Mr Senzo Mchunu will, on Saturday, 24 April 2010 officially launch the Paint Fest project.

The project is an initiative of Speaker Nkonyeni to encourage Members of Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and communities to do voluntary work in their respective areas. The project will be launched on the far northern part of the province at two schools: Madonela Primary and Mkhaliphi Secondary Schools in the Umkhanyakude district.

Commenting about the launch of the project, Speaker Nkonyeni said: "Whilst the project will be officially launched in the Umkhanyakude district, it is however a province wide initiative and will be undertaken in all eleven districts."

The schools which will be painted were identified by MPLs during their School Functionality Monitoring programme when the schools opened for the first term in January this year. The MECs, as champions of various districts on the side of government, and MPLs will be deployed to different districts where they will, together with communities, paint schools that desperately need a "facelift".

This will be an ongoing project until all the schools identified at the beginning of the year are painted. District and municipal Speakers, mayors and councillors have been invited to the launch of this project and are being encouraged to participate in it when their schedules permit them to do so.

This project relies on donation mainly from the Independent Development Trust (IDT); however, any useful material will be greatly welcomed to ensure that the project becomes a success.
