Hanekom heads to Angola for bilateral science talks

The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will be leading a high-level delegation to Luanda for a strategic meeting with his Angolan counterpart, Minister Maria Teixeira, on 20 March 2013.

This will be preceded by a meeting of the South Africa-Angola Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC), the fifth since the agreement establishing the JCC was signed in 2000.

South Africa and Angola enjoy strategic relations in a number of areas, including agriculture, health and tourism.

A bilateral agreement on scientific and technological (S&T) cooperation was signed in 2008, and several technical visits have been undertaken between the two countries since then. At the fourth JCC, held in 2012, Angola and South Africa agreed on Science and Technology cooperation in areas such as the biosciences, information and communication technologies, energy and climate change.

This week's JCC will evaluate progress made in the implementation of activities agreed on in 2012, as well as discussing the allocation of resources geared towards implementing new priorities and activities.
