GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES COMMIT TO CHAMPIONING ROAD SAFETY IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The MEC for Transport, Community safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, has committed the provincial

government employees to working tirelessly in championing safety on the road.

Mchunu together with employees of the Department of Transport were the first to sign a road safety

pledge committing employees and the provincial government to reducing the scourge of road carnage.

Addressing well over 600 employees in Ladysmith over the weekend, MEC Mchunu, said government is

looking at stringent policy proposals to ensure punitive measures against employees of the government

who commit traffic violations.

“During the budget speech I challenged everyone in government to be a true ambassador for

road safety. From the Premier to MECs, officials and employees, we must all do something to

lead by example in championing safety on the road. We are exploring possible policy

interventions to ensure that tough measures are taken against employees of government who

are failing to adhere to traffic regulations,” said Mchunu.

Department of Transport employees in the Ladysmith region led by the Head of Department signed the

pledge committing themselves to complying with all traffic laws.

The campaign of ensuring that government takes the lead in road safety was announced by MEC Mchunu

during his budget vote speech last month under the theme “Road safety is our collective responsibility”.

“All of us, we must do something to deal decisively with the scourge of road accidents.

Government has its fleet and employees own their private vehicles, therefore it only makes

perfect sense to start at home. We will be engaging with business, labour unions, public

transport, the Interfaith and other sectors to see how they can also impose heavy penalties on

their employees to create national consciousness on road safety,” said MEC Mchunu.
