Election of the new Speaker of the KZN Legislature

Honourable Lydia Johnson was this morning elected as the new Speaker of the KZN Legislature replacing Honourable Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni who was sworn-in yesterday as the new education MEC.

Johnson, who was the legislature's Chairperson of Committees, brings a wealth of experience into her new portfolio. She has served as the MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs and is one of the longest serving Members of the Provincial Legislature.

Honourable Sipho Gcabashe was also elected as the new Chairperson of Committees. Gcabashe, who is also a seasoned member of the legislature, was the Chairperson of the Premier and Royal Household Portfolio Committee.

Both are senior leaders of the African National Congress.

They have welcomed their new roles and thanked the Members of the Provincial Legislature for the confidence that they have shown into the two leaders.
