The Social Work Amendment Act 48 of 1989 intends:

  • to amend the Social and Associated Workers Act, 1978, so as
  • to delete the definitions of "associated profession", "associated worker" and "social work", to insert definitions of "social auxiliary worker" and "training institution", and to amend certain definitions;
  • to change the designation "Council for Social and Associated Workers" to "South African Council for Social Work";
  • to provide that the quorum for and procedure at meetings of the executive committee shall be prescribed;
  • to increase fines;
  • to provide when qualifications will not serve as prescribed qualifications;
  • to provide for the registration of additional qualifications and specialities;
  • to provide for the registration of social auxiliary workers;
  • to make further provision in connection with inquiries by the council into alleged unprofessional or improper conduct;
  • to empower the council in disciplinary inquiries to postpone the imposition of a penalty or to suspend the execution of a penalty;
  • to make further provision in connection with the conducting of disciplinary inquiries by the council;
  • to extend the powers of the Minister to make regulations; and
  • to extend the period of office of members of the Council for Social and Associated Workers; and
  • to provide for incidental matters.
