Department commemorates World Diabetes Day

This Friday, Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Ntombi Mekgwe will host a diabetes awareness event at Carltonville, West Rand.

This awareness campaign is ahead of World Diabetes Day which is on Sunday, 14 November.

Under the theme Diabetes Prevention and Education and the campaign slogan Protect your Kidneys, Control Diabetes, the department’s health professionals will be educating the community and screening people for blood glucose, foot care for people at risk, eye screening for diabetic related eye complications and cataracts, weight measurement, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The aim of the campaign is to ensure early detection of diabetes as that leads to early intervention of the condition, reducing complications of the illness such as blindness, kidney disease, cardio vascular diseases and amputations of limbs.

In dealing with this condition, the department has established 93 support groups across the province.

Services are accessible in all public health facilities and health promoters encourage healthy eating habits, physical activity, discouraging smoking and drinking alcohol and maintaining normal weight.
