The Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, members and staff are deeply saddened by the passing away of Honourable John Zakhele Mchunu. He passed away this morning (Wednesday, 6 October 2010) at a hospital in Durban.
Mchunu was the Chairperson of the Sport and Recreation Portfolio Committee, and also served as an alternate member of the Premier and Royal Household Committee.
"His untimely death has robbed KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa one of the exceptional leaders who contributed immensely to the liberation of this country and a distinguished Member of the Provincial Legislature.
"The KwaZulu-Natal legislature wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to his family and it will forever treasure the contributions he made as an honourable member of the provincial legislature and an activist in the struggle for liberation and the building and advancement of our democracy," said KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Speaker, the Honourable Neliswa Nkonyeni, MPL.
Mchunu's memorial service will be held at the Durban City Hall on Thursday at 16h00.
The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature extends condolences to his family, friends and relatives.
