World Diabetes Day 2020

14 November

On 20 December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a landmark Resolution recognising diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease. The Resolution designates World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year starting in 2007.

The UN Resolution makes World Diabetes Day stronger than ever and provides the opportunity for a significant increase in the visibility of the campaign and an increase in government and media participation on or around November 14. The Resolution will ensure even greater reach for awareness-raising activities throughout the diabetes world.

According to the International Diabetes Dederation, by 2035, almost 600 million of us may be living with diabetes. 415 million adults have diabetes. By 2040 this will rise to642 million.

Increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes is associated with higher levels of urbanisation, ageing populations, more sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy diets, including high sugar intake. Although there is not much you can do about the first two, you can make sure that you get enough excercise and keep the sugar in your diet low.
