Western Cape Government and the Department of Arts and Culture
host Free People’s Concert

2 April 2009

The Western Cape government and the national Department of Arts and Culture
will host a massive free People’s Concert featuring top local and international
acts on Sunday, 5 April 2009.

World class acts Shakatak, Mos Def and the stylistics will entertain about
20 000 people at the Swartklip Sports Complex, situated on the border of
Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha.

The Free People's Concert is hosted in collaboration with the organisers of
the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, which is in its tenth year and a
major feature on the province’s calendar of events. This annual event injects
hundreds of millions of rands into the local economy and creates much-needed
work opportunities.

Western Cape Premier Lynne Brown has urged communities to take advantage of
the fact that they will be able to see world class entertainment for
free.
“Music has always been a unifier, a cultural experience that brings people
together. This Free People’s Concert, featuring top international and local
artists, shows that government is committed to bringing people, music and a
message of peaceful co-existence together on one stage. This is also an
experience that would otherwise be out of the reach of most of our people and I
want to urge our communities to take advantage of this opportunity created by
their government and enjoy themselves,” said Premier Brown.

The People’s Concert, to be held for the second year running, is aimed at
the masses of people who cannot afford to attend the main festival on the two
preceding days.

Last year, the national and provincial governments also collaborated with
the Cape Town International Jazz Festival to take the world famous Manhattans
to the same venue. This year, music lovers will be entertained by the
international superstar, Mos Def, as well as the Gang of Instrumentals, Sylvia
Mdunyelwa, Shakatak, The stylistics and Claire Phillips.

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is not only a major event to South
Africa and the Western Cape, it is also a hugely successful international event
and rates as the fourth best Jazz festival in the world.

Since its inception in 2000, attendance figures have increased to 32 000
from the initial 14 000 and takes place at the Cape Town International
Convention Centre. Annually, the festival attracts jazz connoisseurs from
across the province, the country and the world. This year will be no different
when more than 40 local and international artists take to the stage on 3 and 4
April 2009.

As part of its efforts to promote Cape Town and the Western Cape as a
destination for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the provincial government will host an
exhibition stand at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival on both days.
