World Economic Forum 2019

22 to 25 January

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the South African delegation to the 49th World Economic Forum annual meeting that will take place on 22-25 January in Davos, Switzerland.

The 2019 theme for this international gathering is “Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is an independent, international organisation whose aim is to contribute to more positive outcomes in the world by engaging business, political leaders, academia and other leaders of society to inform and shape the global, regional and industry agendas.

The primary objective of the South African delegation will be to strengthen partnerships and collaboration for inclusive economic growth and development in South Africa, with particular emphasis on increasing international investment into the country.

South Africa has the most developed, diversified, technologically advanced and industrially integrated economy on the African continent.

The country remains one of the preferred investment destinations in Africa and is also an important gateway for markets and other business opportunities throughout the continent.

The South African economy has become increasingly diversified over the years, thereby reducing its sectoral concentration risks, particularly in mining. This has unlocked a diverse range of high yield investment opportunities, predominantly but not exclusively in sectors with high export propensities.

The top five sectors in the economy – finance and business services; general government services; trade, catering and accommodation services; manufacturing; and transport, storage and communication services – accounted for 76% of GDP in 2017.

The Davos delegation led by President Ramaphosa will be coordinated by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and will include leadership of government, business and labour.

Government will be represented by:

  • Minister of Finance, Mr Tito Mboweni
  • Minister of Communications, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams
  • Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies
  • Minister of Economic Development, Mr Ebrahim Patel
