In his statement to the nation delivered on Monday, 23 March 2020, His Excellency the President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an escalation of measures to combat the global pandemic, COVID-19. The National Coronavirus Command Council has decided to enforce a nation-wide lockdown for 21 days with effect from midnight Thursday, 26 March 2020, until midnight Thursday, 16 April 2020.

Covid-19 interventions for tourism sector

Yesterday, the President announced new measures that have been effected including a nationwide lockdown to safeguard the well-being of all South Africans.

The introduction of the measures, as announced by the president, are a response to the unprecedented crisis facing our country and the world over. The number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections continues to increase, world markets have gone into a tail spin and the pandemic threatens human lives in all parts of the world and has altered life as we know it.

Tourism on romoting sustainable tourism through guiding

More than 200 tourist guides from across the country gathered at the Constitutional Hill monument in Johannesburg for the annual International Tourist Guide Day  (ITG) Celebrations that took place from 12 to 13 March 2020. Themed “Tourist Guides – Contributors to Sustainable Tourism and Jobs,” the two day event explored the contribution of the guiding profession in creating sustainable economies at the face of an evolving tourism landscape.

International tourist guiding celebrations – Gauteng

The Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) will host the International Tourist Guides’ Day (ITG) celebrations at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg – Gauteng. 

Themed “Tourist Guides – Contributors to Sustainable Tourism and Jobs,” the ITG celebrations will take stock of the contribution of the Guiding Profession in creating sustainable tourism economies and jobs.

Learners receive credentials in responsible tourism practices

 “We need to expand tourism in a sustainable way through reduced energy, water and waste management”, stated Deputy Minister of Tourism, Fish Mahlalela during a certification ceremony in Emalahleni Local Municipality today.

The event saw 18 Mpumalanga youth receive Tourism Resource Efficiency Training certificates from the Department of Tourism.

Mpumalanga learners to receive credentials in the field of responsible tourism practices

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr Fish Mahlalela, will officiate the certification ceremony of Mpumalanga learners who successfully completed the Department’s Tourism Resource Efficiency Training Programme.

Initiated in 2017, the Tourism Resource Efficiency Training initiative is funded by the Green Tourism Incentive Programme, and forms part of the greater NTSS objective to promote responsible tourism practices in the sector.
