In his budget speech to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbablula paid tribute to several top South Africa sports people, and called on all South Africans to wear their Magnificent Fridays shirts in support of the national teams participating in the upcoming Rugby World Cup and Netball World Championships.
He also quoted figures from the new budget and highlighted the areas of sport in which it would mostly be spent. The national sports budget had diminished significantly from the previous budget, which included funds for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
