Stellenbosch building disaster probe resumes

A formal inquiry into the Stellenbosch building collapse which left three employees dead and scores of others injured will resume next week.

The inquiry that went on for almost a week in August last year found that the props used in the 2008 Stellenbosch construction accident were from Italy and their compliance with the South African National Standards requirements were questionable.

This has resulted in the Italian Manufacturer of the Puntelli Props, OFFICINE VILLALTA SPA, being subpoenaed to appear before the enquiry. The company will be represented by Frank Biccari, their legal representative who is based in Johannesburg.

The incident occurred during renovations of a building in Distillery Street, Bosman Crossing.

Media is invited and should RSVP with Temba Gubula: tgubula@labour.gov.za

Details of the enquiry:
