The Northern Cape Provincial Government will mark the 40th anniversary commemoration of the 1976 Soweto uprisings and Youth Day at the Noord-Kaap Primary school in Olifantshoek in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. The commemoration will be marked under a theme “Youth Moving South Africa Forward”. It will be addressed by Premier Sylvia Lucas who will be accompanied by other Members of Executive Council.
The commemoration will be preceded by a Youth Day Memorial Lecture to be held at Postdene Community Hall in the ZF Mgcawu District on Wednesday, 15 June 2016. The lecture will be addressed by the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba.
The 2016 celebrations follow a successful Provincial Youth Summit and Career Expo which were held in Upington between Thursday 08 June and Saturday 11 June 2016.
The 2016 commemoration also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the final draft of the Constitution into law and the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women's march to the Union Buildings.
It also coincides with South Africa holding its fifth municipal or local government elections.
