MEC Debbie Schäfer on Wynberg Girls High School discrimination and misconduct allegations

WCED is investigating allegations at Wynberg Girls High School

On Monday this week, learners of the Waterloo Boarding House at Wynberg Girls High School released a statement to the media and on social networks. The statement contained serious and concerning allegations of racism, discrimination and misconduct.

A District Official went to the school yesterday afternoon and met with the learners once they had completed their exam.

At this stage I can confirm that:

  • The WCED is conducting an investigation into all allegations
  • The learners will not be victimised in any way for voicing their concerns. I am informed that the Circuit Manager provided the hostel learners with her mobile number and said they should contact her at any stage.
  • We are not able to provide timelines for the investigation as this is a thorough process that will involve interviewing all parties involved

In conducting the investigation, the Department will also be mindful that the learners are writing their end of year examinations, which will conclude on 28 November 2016.

We appeal to the media to respect this fact and not disrupt schooling.

I would also like to remind learners that they can report any serious concerns directly to the Department via the Safe Schools hotline on 0800 45 46 47.

All media queries should be directed to Jessica Shelver and Millicent Merton and not to the school.
