Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities hosts Economic Empowerment Summit on Persons with Disabilities, 7-8 Dec

Economic Empowerment Summit on persons with disabilities set to showcase entrepreneurship and capacity building opportunities

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will host the Economic Empowerment Summit on Persons with Disabilities on 7-8 December at the Radisson Hotel in Bredell, Kempton Park, Johannesburg. 

The two-day summit will be attended by a number of ministers, including Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, government officials and other key stakeholders in the disability sector, as well as Civil Society partners.

The event will draw major disability organisations like the South African Disability Alliance, Blind SA, DeafBlind SA, Disabled Youth South Africa etc., academic institutions like the University of Pretoria, Tshwane University of Technology, Nelson Mandela University, and business sector partners like AB-InBev, Vodacom, Motheo Construction Group, etc. The call for participation had over 50 organisations, alliance partners and interest groups expressing their interest in being a part of this exciting summit. The event will also have strong representation from both national and provincial government. 

This event forms part of Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) series of activities which runs from 3 November to 3 December each year. The theme for DRAM 2022 is: Empowering persons with disabilities through resourceful, sustainable and safe environments.

In addition to the plenary, there will be exhibitions displaying products designed for and by persons with disabilities.

The two-day event will cover barriers in the economic landscape hindering persons with disabilities to access markets, access to funding, but also celebrate persons with disabilities in business and have them share experiences to inspire others.
