MEC Alan Winde encourages riders to enter cycle race

Western Cape opens entries for 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour

Entries for the most iconic timed cycle race in the world, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, open today.

“Entries will open at 1pm today, and are limited to 35 000 riders. The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of our most prestigious events and entries traditionally sell out faster than Wayde van Niekerk.”

Next year the event takes place on 12 March.

Below is the process to secure a general entry, as outlined by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust:

  • Apply for a general entry:

Between Wednesday, 17 August at 1pm to Tuesday, 23 August at 4pm, prospective riders can apply at www.capetowncycletour.com. Doing so amounts to an indication of interest only, and will not ensure an entry. Prospective entrants will be required to update their details at the same time.

  • Entry confirmation:

During the week of Monday, 29 August, successful applicants will receive confirmation emails from the Cape Town Cycle Tour Events Office to advise that they have been awarded an entry.  Unsuccessful applicants will also receive an email notification and will be invited to enter via a supporting charity or by means of the official substitution process in February 2017.

  • Securing an entry:

Successful applicants will have until Monday, 5 September at 1pm to make payment to secure their entry.  Payment not received by this date and time, or the applicant’s option to decline the entry, will result in that entry being made available to a previously unsuccessful rider.  Local general entries will cost R510 per rider and PPA member will pay R480.

Minister Winde also welcomed the news that the Coronation Double Century would be able to travel through Swellendam.

“Races such as the Coronation Double Century are playing an important role in boosting tourism to our region by showcasing our spectacular scenery and cycling offering. Through Project Khulisa, we are seeking to attract 100 000 cycling tourists to our region each year. It is our goal to become Africa’s cycling capital. We know these events are important economic generators for towns across this province. Events hosted across the province generate in excess of R1 billion for our economy each year.

“Confirmation of the Swellendam route is excellent news for the local tourism sector, and surrounding towns such as Montagu, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale. The hospitality industry in the region will once again be fully booked. We are looking forward to another spectacular race this year, backed by Coronation and expertly arranged by the professional team at the Cycle Trust.”

Prospective riders can apply online at www.capetowncycletour.com.
