Water and Sanitation delivers water tanks to Umjindi and Thembisile Hani Local Municipalities

Water tanks for drought relief

The Department of Water and Sanitation has delivered 80 kl (80 000 litres) water tanks to Umjindi and Thembisile Hani Local Municipalities as part of drought relief. The water tanks have been delivered to bring relief to the communities of Barberton and Kwaggafontein.

The two municipalities are some of the municipalities most affected by the current drought in the Mpumalanga Province.

The water tanks will assist the local communities with water supply in times of water shortages. The water sources in both municipalities are running low and with the current drought there is little possibility of rain. The Department of Water and Sanitation intervened by bringing the water tanks to mitigate the negative impact of the drought on communities.

The tanks are filled with water to ensure that community members have access to the resource. Community members are therefore encouraged to take ownership and care for the tanks to ensure that they have access to the source of life in hard times as the drought is still with us.

South Africa is a water scarce country and the current drought is making the water challenge severe which calls for all of us to change our water use behaviour and embrace water conservation in everything we do.
