North West Government on launch of Jericho Rural Water Supply Project

Jericho rural water supply project successfully launched

Jericho village near Brits came alive today when North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane accompanied by various MECs visited the area to launch the Jericho Rural Water Supply Project.

Launched in conjunction with Magalies Water, the project involved the laying of pipelines, reticulation, testing and drilling of boreholes, ascertaining the yield of the boreholes, as well as connecting the feeder lines to the existing network and the main reservoir.

Minister Mokonyane said government was determined to work with communities to bring lasting solutions to their problems.

“We can’t solve community issues without working together with the community. Repair and maintenance of boreholes will go a long way to ensure that the infrastructure functions optimally to provide our people with water,” she said.

Both Mokanyane and Premier Mahumapelo encouraged communities to look after the water infrastructure provided by government.

“We are here to deliver on our promise to solve problems relating to water in the area. We want the community to look after the water infrastructure,” said Premier Mahumapelo.

Two hundred wheelbarrows specially designed for purposes of carrying water were also distributed to residents. One of the recipients Elizabeth Rakgwatlha (60) said they could see that the government was serious about addressing their plight.

Another resident Motimedi Baloyi, a pensioner, was elated to see a tap in her yard working. “I am very proud that this tap is now working. I used to pay for water. Buy a big drum of water every three days because I live with children. Now this has come to an end,” she said.

Magalies Water’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Charles Mohalaba said they were very excited with the way things have progressed.
