DWS to promote handwashing in Eastern Cape schools

The Department of Water and Sanitation in partnership with the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Education and various municipalities will embark on handwashing education drive to celebrate Global Hand Washing Day from 11 – 18 October 2016.

A number of activities will be held in various schools around the province to inculcate a culture of washing hands with soap. This annual commemoration will be held under the theme “Make Handwashing a habit”.

The purpose of Global Hand Washing Day is to create awareness about the importance of handwashing with soap to prevent diseases and to save lives.

According to a research by Center for Disease Control and Prevention, if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented.

It is also estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrhea disease-associated deaths by up to 50%.
