Water and Sanitation persists on finding ways to alleviate the impact of drought

The Department of Water and Sanitation persists on finding ways to mitigate drought in the country and find alternative ways to deliver water to all citizens.

At the inaugural meeting of the Departmental Steering Committee on drought interventions held on 13 January at the Roodeplaat Training Centre, representatives from each province gathered to share their progress made to date.

The purpose of the Steering Committee is to ensure the assurance of quality of provincial drought interventions, to discuss drought mitigation business plans, to establish standards for the costing of drought interventions as well to ensure conformance with reporting requirements of the National Disaster Management Centre.

As part of the discussions, the dam levels throughout the country were prioritised and emphasis was placed on ensuring that operating rules are enforced in each province.

During the meeting the Deputy Director General for Strategic and Emergency projects, Trevor Balzer the drought situation is not going to change in the next few months. “We are expecting below average rainfall for the remainder on the summer,” he added.

It was further shared that water management by municipalities is very key in this case.

The presentation indicated that even though the rainfall this week may partially ease the extreme circumstances, this will only be short term.
