Water and Sanitation delivers millions of litres of water through mobile tanks

The Department of Water and Sanitation has since December delivered more than 20 million of litres of water through water tankering in the North West Province.

Since the North West Province drought declaration, there have been constant coordination of integrated planning and actions including monitoring and progress reporting of interventions made towards drought relief.

A number of water tankers have been delivered in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality supplying Tswaing Local Municipality (LM), Mahikeng LM, Ramotshere Moiloa LM, Ratlou LM, Kgetleng LM, Ventersdorp LM and Mamusa LM to temporarily supply water to affected communities.

Some of the drought mitigation measures to address water shortages include ground water source development, rehabilitation of boreholes to augment supply, improvement of operating rules for dams, and improvement of early warning system as currently Molatedi Dam managed by Sedibeng Water and Botswana Water Utilities Corporation is already under restricted operation.

The acting Regional Head, Dr Tseliso Ntili mentioned that the Office of the Premier has developed a drought communication strategy so as to strengthen public awareness and communication with communities. The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane has also presented the drought management plan to the Bokone Bophirima executive Commiittee Lekgotla earlier this month.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is regularly updating dam levels information on its website - www.dws.gov.za.
