Umgeni Water Supply System stands firm above the 80% mark
The Umgeni Water Supply System in KwaZulu-Natal supplying parts of the eThekwini Metro and surrounds continues to increase as the Department of Water and Sanitation prepares for the winter dry season in earnest.
According to a weekly report on the status of dam levels, the Department noted that the System stands incredibly firm at 85.2% from last week’s 84.2%. Comparative to a similar period in 2020, it recorded 71.4%.
Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said some of the preparations underway ahead of the winter season include servicing of water tankers which have been provided to municipalities for water augmentation.
“You would recall that during the hard lockdown last year, the Department together with the KZN government and our entities, embarked on a mass roll out of water tanks and tankers. This is to ensure that communities are able to get water in times of need, such as during the winter season when rainfall doesn’t happen too often,” said Ratau.
Ratau said the province’s storage capacity has slightly increased from last week’s 73.0% to 73.4% in the current week. When compared to a similar period last year, the province’s dam levels stood at 60.9%.
Midmar Dam is at 100.5% from 100.7% and Nagle at 89.0% from 85.8%. Meanwhile Albert-Falls and Inanda Dams have recorded 54.7% and 101.0% respectively. They stood at 53.0% and 100.9% in the previous week.
The Department has since called on residents to use water prudently as it continues to implement measures to alleviate water shortages in the province.
“These measures also include effective implementation on mega water projects and the refurbishment of aging infrastructure,” said Ratau.
