DWS hands over 10 (ten) 18 000 litre water trucks to the province of the Eastern Cape
Mbashe Local Municipality, Eastern Cape: The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) continues its endeavours to ensure security of the supply of water for the country. This is the basis upon which the Minister Nomvula Mokonyane paid a two-day (28 – 29th) working visit to the province.
Minister Mokonyane engaged with the Provincial Executive Council led by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr F. Xasa, representing Premier Phumulo Masualle. The area of Mbashe is one of those that have been experiencing a great deal of drought in the province, thus the choice of the area to receive the water trucks that will ensure that the community will be served appropriately.
In handing over the trucks Minister Mokonyane said that “we are here to deliver these 10 (ten) 18 000 litre trucks, at the same time we will refurbish 25 (twenty-five) boreholes, there will be a R200 Municipal Water Infrastructure Grant for the eastern Cape to be reprioritized by each municipality, subject to DWS approval.
“At the same time there will be supply of water from Katse Dam in Lesotho to Aliwal North, the development of the EC Water Master Plan, a new scheme for the Amathole DM within the next 6 – 8 months; we will continue to raise awareness on water saving. There will be a provincial water and sanitation functional coordinating committee convened by the provincial COGTA.
“This is the essence of what we are leaving here in the Eastern Cape on this visit. We also put it out there that we will return at the end of January top assess what progress will be underway by then”, Minister Mokonyane said.
