Motorists urged to be vigilant when travelling over weekends

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) would like to advise motorists to be extra vigilant when travelling over weekends and at night as the risk of getting involved in crashes increases over this period.

An analysis of crashes shows that fatal road collisions are high on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The risks are highest between 17h00 and 23h00.

This comes as the RTMC is investigating three major crashes that three crashes that claimed 16 lives over the weekend in the Free State, Eastern Cape and Limpopo.

On Saturday night five people were killed and 17 injured when a minibus and a bus were involved in a crash on the N1 near Brandfort in the Free State.

In another crash on Saturday morning, five more people were killed when a minibus and another motor vehicle collided on the N2 between Tsolo and Umthatha in the Eastern Cape.

In Limpopo, six people died when two motor vehicles collided on the N1 Naboomspruit offramp on Saturday morning.

The exact cause of these crashes have not yet been determined as investigations are still underway.

The RTMC calls on motorists who will be travelling to various destinations in the coming week to choose their travelling time and days very carefully to avoid the risk of collisions.

Traffic volumes are expected rise sharply as factories close and holiday makers make their journeys to their favourite destinations while migrant workers will be going back home to spend the Christmas holidays with family and friends.

Traffic law enforcement will be deployed on all busy routes and hazardous locations to minimise crashes and ensure compliance with the rules of the road.
