University of Fort Hare Centenary

20 May 2016

The University of Fort Hare celebrates its centenary this year. The University which opened its doors in 1916 will hold a year-long programme of events to showcase its 100-year history. The opening event to kick-start the centenary celebrations was held on 8 February 2016 while the national and SADC celebration took place on 20 May 2016.

Alumni who include African leaders, eminent persons, business people and political leaders attendED the celebration. The university had attracted a number of students from across the continent and produced Presidents such as Sir Seretse Khama of Botswana, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

The celebrations which coincide with Africa Month commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity presently known as the Africa Union. The AU aims to promote greater unity and solidarity between African countries. It seeks to accelerate the political and socio-economic integration of Africa.

The centenary celebration is a significant milestone for the university, which is the oldest historically black university in the country. The celebration will acknowledge the role the university has played in the fight against apartheid and in educating both black South Africans and Africans.

The celebration provides an opportunity to teach our children the importance of historically black institutions.

President Jacob Zuma of South Africa and President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe addressed the celebration.
